In a fishing trip gone wrong, Henry finds himself on a beach in a storm. With no memory of how he got there, and no sign of anyone around, he must figure out how to get back to his family.

Madeline worries for her husband’s safety and for her granddaughter’s wellbeing as Lacey’s world crumbles around her.

Elen is a hardworking detective put on Henry’s case, and is determined to answer the question: what exactly happened on that fishing trip?

Almost crime, almost mystery, Ambergris is both unsettling and comfortable. Briony Collins writes simply and beautifully through events that destroy a family in front of your eyes.

Alys Conran says ‘Intricately woven and mysterious, Ambergris is achingly compelling.’

Deann Bell says ‘I love it. So twisted. [Her] use of poetic description to land the reader in both real and imagined spaces is beautiful. It really felt like a family tapestry of love coming unwound.’

Collins’ novel was absolutely amazing. I could barely put it down, it had a tight grip on me and wouldn’t let me go until I finished it. It was hauntingly beautiful and it’s one that’ll definitely stick with me for a long time!

Ambergris is a book which creeps up on you. It’s hard to define its genre, which is part of its appeal. Part murder mystery, part psychological thriller, part literary novel, there’s something in here for everyone. For me, what really stays with me long after reading is the question of our own moral standing. I find myself wondering if I were in the characters’ shoes, what would I do? Who would I defend? Who would I love more? For me this is not just a novel about a family’s psychology falling apart, it asks important questions around morality, love and loyalty. A book which deserves to be read by lovers of all literary genres. An easy five stars.

You’ve done a better job describing this book than I have! Thank you so much!
